Find 52: St. Lucia

Find 52: St. Lucia isn’t just about lacing up a pair of running shoes on the Road to Reading. It’s about working together to sustain the Rainforest of Reading for the students of St. Lucia.

And why is working together so important? Literacy transforms lives and is deeply connected to individual success, the empowerment of girls and the prosperity of communities. Literacy is the road that connects people to new possibilities.

Let’s travel this road together. Let’s show St. Lucian children they can have big dreams and can make them happen, too! The groups in the yellow chart below are taking big steps for literacy development. Will your school or community group be next to sign up?

I read; I travel; I become.

The goal for 2020

March 2020 will see a new combined version of the Rainforest of Reading Festival and Find 52: The National Road to Reading Relay. Three mini-festivals will be held at selected school locations and will see two days of relay running from Soufriere Comprehensive Secondary School to Belle Vue Combined School.

The participating schools for 2020 are asked to collect $2 per student to demonstrate the local committment to the Rainforest of Reading.

Why is this so important?

International investors often expect a level of local contribution before offering sponsorship, which will ultimately help the Rainforest of Reading return on a national level.

International Literacy Day 2019

September 2019 is the perfect time to collect student donations. Every year, September 8th marks UNESCO’s International Literacy Day, raising awareness globally on the issues surrounding adult and child literacy. Your school can celebrate this special day, as well as a new academic year, by supporting the Rainforest of Reading.

How to run a Find 52: St. Lucia event

Your school, community group, business or organization can register with Mrs. Leonise Francois or Dr. Verneta Lesforis with the Ministry of Education. They will assist you with your fundraising efforts, including collecting funds generated.

Additional ideas to supplement school contributions can include bake sales, book fairs, church suppers, concerts, or even a version of Pass the Paton, where you toss a $1 coin into a jar and sign a specially-designed pledge sheet showing your support. As many already know, these pledge sheets are rolled up and inserted into a baton. Student runners will carry these batons during the next Find 52 Relay on March 19th and 20th in 2020.

Want to organize your own Find: 52 St. Lucia event?

Please contact Mrs. Francois or Dr. Verneta Lesforis to officially sign up! They’ll let us know here in Canada and we’ll update your fundraising progress! Show students, families and other community members you’re going the distance for literacy, too!

International Literacy Day 2016
Soufrière Primary ran a relay on September 8, 2016 to celebrate reading. The event was filmed as part of the "run-up" to our first Find 52 Thousand campaign in 2017. Over 1,000 students from grade 3-12 ran 1 mile segments right around St. Lucia.

Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere.

Finding the way for Fundraising
Olympian Jake Holden and Richard Clewes survey the route for Find 52 in January 2016. The duo were joined by St. Lucian Olympic athletes and members of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force.

A road is a song, a poem, a movie, an adventure. It's hope and optimism, and inquisitiveness.

The Angry Isle
Find 52 started in Grenada
52 miles gets you right around this small, beautiful island. Companions on the second day included: Philip Clift from Petite Anse Hotel, an enthusiastic young boy and one very fit dog named "Dodgy".

The world is a book and those who do not travel read only a page.

Fundraising is an Uphill Battle
In January 2015, I ran 52 miles in Grenada. Let me dismiss athletic motives; it so happens 52 miles gets you all the way around the island. I did it for money – $40,000 – all of which went to OneWorld Schoolhouse. CTV National news ran the story on May 25, 2015 and so began Find 52.

All men should strive to learn before they die what they are running from, and to, and why.
